We have been asked if the Alumni would like to sponsor a Scholarship for a Graduating Senior starting in 2010.

A $1,000 scholarship would mean that each Alumni would be asked to contributed $2.00 each year to a Scholarship fund.

Questions are ( and please post your thoughts here )

1. Should we do a scholarship at all ?
1. If yes should we ask each Alumni to contribute $2.00 to the Scholarship fund each year
2. What should the Scholarship selection criteria be based on
3. Should we just provide the school with the money each year and allow them to select the winner or ask for Alumni to form a selection committee of it's own ?

The Scholarship would be called the Hingham High Alumni Scholarship

Please reply back to this message with your thoughts and ideas by 12/1/09 so we can give an answer back.

What Academics level should  it be set at ?

A or B or C  - average

Should that average be based on all 4 years or just for their senior year or something else ?
Should some type of community service be required or purely based on GPA

I say no, although a nice idea, for those of use who got into this site (and this is the 1st time I have been able to successfully return) to say that all alumni are going to pay into this is like the British taxing the colonies tea, it's not the amount, it's the principle. And in these current economic times not all our alumni may be in the positions to contribute even that little amount. I talk to people ever day who are in hard times, hard working well educated professional people that due to job loss are now losing their homes and latterly don't know were they are going to be living next month. undecided

Contributing towards the scholarship would not be a requirement at all. You can contribute if you want to.

This is also why we have asked the question of all Alumni - so the British Tax example is not a good one.

Based on the # of Registered alumni currently, this would amount to $2 per alumni - as membership increases each year this amount would go down also.

Everyone has there own financial issues to deal with everyday agreed, but a $2 contribution could surely be found if we all just looked under our couches cushions once a year.

Please cast your vote above as the final determination will be based on this polls results.

I think the scholarship proposal is a great idea.  What a nice tribute to all of us who graduated from HHS.  Pay it forward folks!

I think it is a great idea to offer a scholarship; BUT it should not be based JUST ON GPA....it should be given to the graduate who has one parent that is an ALUMNUS of HHS!!

I think the Scholarship is a fantastic idea. Although at first glance I though that giving it to only Hingham high alumni kids was a good idea upon thinking about it further I don't think that should be a prerequisite. Reason being it would limit severely who could receive it, as most of us I suspect do not live in Hingham or have kids attending Hingham Schools.

I'd much rather see the community service thing be apart of the scholarship so my vote would be for a B average over 4 year or an A average their senior year - an either or thing. Since the majority of us Alumni - myself included were -most likely just average Students I would like to think we are giving a scholarship to an average student who has given back to the community during their time at Hingham High - that type of student I think has a great chance of succeeding in college and beyond

I think that a scholarship is a good idea.  It would be nice if it could be available to any Hingham High School senior and I think it should be based on school activities and GPA, maybe a B+ to A average.  I think that it would be good if the school could choose the recipient.

I think providing a scholarship is a nice idea, however I think that it should only go to a senior that is in need of financial assistance.  Also, I would only be willing to contribute to this scholarship if that were the case.  I am not in favor of allowing the school to decide on the criteria of the scholarship.

Thank you

If the funds are available it sounds like a nice idea.
You can ask, but not all alumni will contribute.
Criteria should include financial need, and use towards further education or training.

I think it is a great idea, $2 or more once a year is not all that much. It is less than you would spend on a cup of coffee or a beer. And combined together $1K or $10k, that can do a student a whole lot more than a cup of coffee or a beer can do for us, especially when things are hard economically.
