Before anyone starts giving money for scholarships, can you tell me if this web site is financially sound? I'd rather raise the money for the continuation of this site first, before looking for money for anything else, as well intentioned as it  may be.

I think the scholarship is a good idea.  However, I don't think it should be limited to children of alumni.  I would suggest that the scholarship be based on need and academic achievement.  If there are alumni in the area who would be interested in helping to choose the recipient, I think that would be a great idea.  However, if the majority prefers to let the school determine the recipient, I would not object.

The operator absorbs 98% of the cost to run the Alumni site itself as registration donations rarely are made. This site has been in existence for over 7 years so yes it's sound.

That being said if the scholarship is offered all monies raised would go to a separate trust account that would be set up at the Hingham Institution for Savings. Before any donations are asked for the School is being consulted as to the best way to organize it.

If anyone still local to the area wants to take charge of the account set up please contact the Webmaster at webmaster@hinghamhighalumni.org

A scholarship based on need, chosen by the school and given to a student who has received a college/tech school acceptance would be my criteria.  For the first recipient, I would like to see a tie in with the Sun Chip $10,000 award, possibly a student attending the Stockbridge/UMass greenhouse/organic program or the like.  I would gladly donate more than $2.00/year for an alumni scholarship.

I would be willing to donate.  I agree the criteria should be based on financial need; cumulative GPA 4 years AND community service.

some excellent comments here....wonderful to see the participation and thoughtfulness.

1.  i think the scholarship is a great idea! i've seen how many HHSers are connected on Facebook and staying in touch with each other so i bet many alum will love the idea of another way to connect with HHS and show their support.
1a.  based on your calculations based on alum registered on this site, $2 each year each member, makes sense as a starting point.  perhaps it's part of a range of suggested donation options each with a box for people to check one like "$2, $20, other".
2.  criteria should be based on financial need, performance and participation in the community/extra curricular activities.  there may be a student who contributes and tries in school (does homework and participates in class) but struggles with grades (perhaps due to hardship/challenges at home or with a learning disability).  this sort of person should have a chance to be recognized and rewarded.
3.  as long as criteria is set and the school agrees to it, they should be able to make the selection.  perhaps there's a local alum each year who reviews the selection/candidates with the school.

i will post this link on facebook too to be sure all the alum i'm connected with are on here.  thanks for handling all this communication and organizing!

I'd like to see it be non sports related though. I think sports programs take too much attention at times from other worthy students. This is not a knock on sports in the least bit - played football myself but as we all know after high school for 99.9999 % of us this has no bearing on real life.

It does not mean a student athlete can not be awarded this scholarship if offered  -just that the fact they are an athlete should have no bearing or weight in the selection process itself.

I like the idea of a Alumni being part of the selection committee if possible

I like the idea, but I agree that it should go to a student in financial need, and one that is involved in sports, or the arts, or some extra cirricular activity or works after school. The school is in the best position to know who those students might be.

It's a nice idea, but how will it be administered? What will it cost to request $2.00 from each alum? How will the funds be collected? It may be too costly in terms of time and money to raise $1,000 in $2.00 increments. What about asking each reunion class to contribute to the scholarship fund? This could be done via lump sum donation from the class or, as part of the reunion mailing, asking each alum to contribute $5.00 to the fund.

This could be done via lump sum donation from the class or, as part of the reunion mailing, asking each alum to contribute $5.00 to the fund.

Who would administer it is unknown at this point and the school has been sent an email with several questions that will help to determine what would need to be done or if donation made on line could be sent directly to the school itself. That would need to be answered as the second step of this process once it's been determined if in fact a scholarship will be offered, which at this point based on Alumni feedback appears that it will be.

The Hingham Institution for Savings was contacted yesterday and they said a trust would need to be set up and a EIN # obtained to open a Alumni Scholarship bank account. We might also want to consider a Bank of America account - if only for the reason that an Alumni could then make a direct deposit at any branch in the country. Personally I hate BOA because of their fee structures but the ability to contribute directly might make this the best option for all.

Where there is a will there is a way - this current discussion is just to determine if the Alumni as a group are willing to do a scholarship.

As far as cost is concerned the donations could be made via pay pal online using credit cards or echecks or by mail in checks. A Pay Pal donation would cost 2.9% in processing fees + .30 per transaction so a $2.00 donation would net out $1.64. Assuming all 632 currently registered Alumni contribute a $2.00 donation this would in fact meet the goal of a $1,000 scholarship with $50 left over for banking fees.

Let's use this discussion to see if any Alumni's are attorney's who would like to help establish an Alumni Trust (a spousal Attorney would work also). If you're an Attorney or your spouse is an Attorney and you can help establish a Hingham High Alumni Trust then please email the webmaster at webmaster@hignhamhighalumni.org

Before anything is done or accomplish a second Alumni discussion and vote will be created to see who would like to work on these questions and logistics. It most likely should be Alumni who live in the Hingham Area I would think. What does everyone else think about this ?

Like all who replied, I too think it is a good idea.  Let the Alumni donate however much they can afford.  The Student must have shown strong community service leadership, have at least a B average and have financial need.

I think a scholarship is a great idea!  I also agree that it should go to a child who's parent is an alumni of HHS!

Let's provide $ to graduates - Really?

The responses that I've read are grammatically deficient and are full of typos!

Let's give the funding to HHS!!!

THAT IS WHO NEEDS IT!
